As Gary's disease has progressed to a new stage in the past couple of weeks, I haven't been able to keep up communication with everyone who loves Gary and wants to know how he is doing. So, I'm starting this blog in hopes that those who are interested can get information here when it is convenient for you. I hope everyone will feel free to make comments here if you have something you'd like to say. Please feel free to continue with emails or phone calls, too. We are grateful for the tremendous love and support of our wonderful family and friends!
love, Jane

transition to hospice

On Tuesday we met with the intake nurse from IHC hospice, and yesterday we met with Colleen, the nurse who is assigned to us. We are working on finding a medication that will help Gary to sleep better; he is rarely able to sleep more than an hour or two before awakening with a dry and irritated mouth and throat. In the last couple of days his fatigue has increased, his stomach pain and need for gastric suction have increased, and his appetite has decreased. The fluid in his abdomen seems to be increasing as well, causing more discomfort. We are working on perhaps getting the fluid drained. His pain is still not severe, but these are hard days! He is meeting them with courage, patience and faith.
It has been such a blessing to have family members here! We love you.

  1. I hope Dr. Bryner will be able to be comfortable soon. I am sorry the chemotherapy did not work well for him. How wonderful that you have been able to have so much family visit! We continue to remember Dr. Bryner and your family in our prayers.
